7 style resolutions for the new year
Start 2018 looking your best and turnover a stylish new leaf by adopting these simple rules.
New year, new you? Here are seven style resolutions every guy should make – and keep – in 2018.
1. Figure out your skincare
Lotions and potions aren’t just a woman’s domain so make 2018 the year you finally learn to take care of your body’s largest organ (gentlemen, please). Start by buying a moisturiser and commit to using it every day – preferably twice a day. Extra points if you choose one with a sunscreen. It won’t be long before you notice a difference – your skin will feel less dry and tight especially after a shower.
2. Find a tailor
Well-fitting clothes make a huge difference and often it’s just small adjustments that are needed to have you looking your very best. You know exactly what we’re talking about – fixing that extra fold of fabric in your suit or sleeves that are just a touch too long can streamline your look. Luckily we offer a tailoring service so you don’t need to look too far. Our tailoring services offer a complete range of alterations, to ensure any suit you purchase or hire from us will be the absolute perfect fit.
3. Know how to ask for what you want at the barber
There’s a specific jargon that you can use when talking to your barber that will make it easier for him to know exactly how you would like your hair to be cut. Start by knowing the specific number of the clippers you want your barber to use. If you don’t know what setting of clippers you prefer, ask your barber to start with a longer setting and progressively get shorter until you find a style you like. Make sure to specify how sharp you want your hair’s transition from long to short to be. For no transition, ask for a shaved part (long on top, buzzed on the sides). For a more conservative style, ask for a natural or blended transition.
4. Do a wardrobe audit
The holidays are the perfect time to take stock of exactly what’s in your wardrobe. Make a list of what you already own and staples you still need to pick up. Concentrate on building up your stock of essentials such as a white dress shirt, a good knitted sweater, dress shoes and a belt that matches, well-fitting jeans and a navy blazer.
5. Get rid of things you don’t wear and you don’t like
While you’re at it, get rid of anything in your closet that you neither wear nor like. Pick out tems you haven’t worn in a year or longer – chances are you won’t wear it this year either. Pare down your closet and you’ll be able to better envision the outfits you’ll be able to make with the remaining pieces.
6. Learn the lingo
Learning how to improve your style and dress better can be intimidating. And it’s intimidating for one big reason: it can be like learning a whole new language. Start by nailing the different dress codes and then use an online cheat-sheet to look up the meanings of words you don’t understand.
7. Learn how to use hair product
Just like your skin, your hair needs help to look it’s best. In 2018, resolve to figure out how to use the best hair product to complement your new hair cut and type. For guys with straight or wavy hair, wax is the perfect product to use on a daily basis while pomade is the best product to use for a slicked-back pompadour look or “Mad Men”-style side part. Lastly, styling cream is more of a thick liquid and is suitable for curly-haired men.
